MLD is recognized and approved by the NHS for treatment of lymphoedema. A lymphoedema (lymphedema) is a swelling caused when part of the lymphatic system is missing, damaged or has been removed. This may occur after cancer treatment. Typically, people may feel a tightness, heaviness or a deep ache in the area. This usually affects arms or legs, but may affect other areas.

Combined Decongestive Therapy is an intensive treatment to move excess fluid into an area with a working lymphatic system. It combines MLD, compression bandaging or garments, exercise and skin care.
